You Won't See Me Cry (2016)

You Won’t See Me Cry was originally shot in 2014 as part of the Fatal Fables idea, but I never properly finished it at the time. The working title was Breaking Up Is Hard, but I came up with a better title shortly before I finally uploaded it.
The story follows Sarah and Pete, who are still in the early stages of a relationship, while Pete’s friend Stu is convinced it will end in tears. As usual, things don’t unfold quite the way anyone expects.

Revisiting the Film

I came back to the film in 2016 after completing an MA module on the director’s role in post-production and learning my way around Adobe Premiere Pro. By then I had a much better idea of what I was looking at, and a much lower tolerance for some of the mistakes I’d happily ignored two years earlier.
I re-edited the film, worked on the colour and generally tried to make the most of what we had actually shot. I only applied colour correction by scene rather than shot by shot, partly because I was still learning and partly because, after two years, I wanted the bloody thing finished.
Keeping the rough cut here alongside the final version makes the difference fairly obvious, and it’s another early example of me going back to old material and seeing how much better it could be made without shooting the whole thing again.
