Unchangeable (2014)
Unchangeable was a collaboration with my cousin Allan Rafferty, made before I started the MA, while I was still finding my way back into filmmaking. Allan had been making films from a young age, and helping out on some of his projects was one of the things that pulled me back towards the world I’d wanted to be part of years earlier.
The story follows Bruce, a homophobic hitman whose son finally tells him he’s gay. Bruce refuses to accept that it isn’t a choice, so he decides the obvious solution is to take his son along on a few hits and turn him into what he considers a “real man”.

We made Unchangeable for the Launch competition on Clowdy, which later became Twine. Allan had the original idea; then we wrote different scenes separately and pulled them together into a final draft. Allan handled the edit.
We came frustratingly close to making the final cut in the competition too. On the last day we were sitting joint seventh, then dropped out of the Top 10 with about an hour to go. Which was a useful early lesson in keeping an eye on these things instead of assuming you’ve got it in the bag.
