Starting a Master's Degree (2015)
Starting a Master’s Degree was a daft little two-minute film I made right at the beginning of the MA, mostly to poke fun at how alien the whole academic world felt to me.
I left school in 1988 with one GCSE at grade C, a handful of lower grades, and absolutely no university background. I’d done plenty of private training since then in hypnotherapy, NLP and related subjects, but going straight from that into a master’s degree was still a bit of a leap.
So this was basically me taking the piss out of the experience: Harvard referencing, endless drafts, wondering whether anything I’d written made sense, briefly contemplating dramatic solutions, then finally hitting Submit and celebrating like I’d won something.
It was shot very simply on a Canon PowerShot SX170 IS, edited in Sony Vegas 11, and was never meant to be anything more than a bit of fun. Looking back, it probably captures the transition quite well.
