Inadvertent grew out of an earlier short called Negating Fear, which I originally made for a Hammer film challenge in 2014.

During the 2020 lockdown, I went back to it thinking I might be able to tighten the old film up in the edit. Around the same time, Stuart Gordon died. His versions of From Beyond and Re-Animator were a huge part of what introduced me to H.P. Lovecraft in the first place, so somewhere along the way the idea changed from “fix the old short” into “do this properly and make it a decent homage.”

The snag was that I only had the finished version of Negating Fear, not all the original footage, and there were a few shots I knew were letting it down.
So I got back in touch with Martin Weston and asked if he’d be up for reshooting those once restrictions eased.

Then, as these things tend to do, it snowballed.
Instead of replacing a handful of shots, I rewrote the script and we ended up reshooting the whole film.

The basic idea stayed the same, but Inadvertent became much more Lovecraftian in tone.
Because we were still working around COVID restrictions, we kept the shoot deliberately small, with Martin Weston in the lead, me directing and appearing in a supporting role, and Regijus Simkevicius handling the cinematography, and a small cameo.

Negating Fear (2014)

Want to see where Inadvertent started?

Negating Fear was my Plan B for a Hammer Horror 24-hour film challenge in 2014. Plan A was a completely different idea that eventually evolved into Para-Hysteria, but when people started dropping out, the backup script became the film we actually made.

It’s rougher and much more stripped back, but you can see the basic idea that eventually became Inadvertent.
