Carry On Regardless

Carry On Regardless was my entry for Raindance’s first 48 Hour Film Challenge for MA and MSc students. The brief came with the usual time pressure, and then three actors dropped out on the day, so I cut scenes and roped in a friend, my mum, and my stepdad to fill the gaps.

Parts of the central character were loosely borrowed from my own life, then pushed in a much sillier and darker direction. He trains in hypnotherapy and mentalism, puts on a show, and after one sceptical audience member declares that it’s all a load of bollocks, things go rather badly wrong.

Technically, this was still very much part of the learning curve. Up to this point, someone else had done most of the editing on our films, but I was starting to take more of it on myself. We shot Carry On Regardless using a GoPro Hero 3 and a Panasonic HMC-AG81E shoulder camera, then I discovered in post that the colours from the two cameras looked completely different. I wasn’t an editor, so my solution at the time was Windows Movie Maker and a blue filter. Crude, but it did the job.

It’s rough, strange and very much of its time, but I still quite like the idea behind it: when everything goes completely off the rails, carry on regardless.
